MISS PENNSYLVANIA PRESS RELEASES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS




The 2003 Miss Pennsylvania Judges

 

Michael Distelhorst

            Michael has been involved with the Miss Iowa Scholarship Program since 1992, currently serving as State Judge’s Chairman and as a member of the State Board of Directors. He has judged local and state preliminary pageants in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin.

            A graduate of Central College in Pella, Iowa, with a degree in Mass Communication, Michael also received his Masters in Communication from the University of Iowa. He is employed by Swift Newspapers, a group of 26 Western State newspapers, and currently serves as Associate Publisher of The Greeley Tribune in Greeley, Colorado, where he resides. He is actively involved with the Colorado State Press Association, Midwest Newspaper Executives Association and a number of other newspaper organizations. He is a partner in his family’s Iowa Century Farm operation and stays active in his community serving on Promises for Children Board and Better Schools/Better Communities Executive Board.
 

Mary D’Arcy

            Mary has most recently starred as Christine Daae opposite both Michael Crawford and Colm Wilkinson in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera”. Ms. D’Arcy also starred on Broadway as Kathy Selden in “Singin’ in the Rain”, and originated the roles of Celeste II/Elaine in “Sunday in the Park with George”, and “Cinderella” in the Playwright’s Horizon workshop of “Into the Woods”, both written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. She is very proud of her work on Sondheim, a recorded tribute to the composer on which she premiered the vocal rendition of “Goodbye for Now”, as well as “Take Me to the World”.

            She has toured the former Soviet Union in Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Ladies” and the United States as Richard Harris’ favorite Guenevere in Camelot. Ms. D’Arcy can be seen opposite James Woods and Drew Barrymore in Steven King’s cult classic “Cat’s Eye”.

            A former Miss New Jersey and judge with the Miss America Organization, she has had many opportunities to sing and serve as “master of ceremonies” throughout the United States. Mary produces her own charity Christmas concert called Mary’s Christmas supporting local charities each December. She currently performs “Broadway Pops” concerts with symphony orchestras across the county accompanied by her husband, Broadway conductor Karl Jurman.
 

 Jerry Duck

            Jerry Duck is the co-producer of the Miss Virginia Pageant and the coordinator of the Miss America Bike Team for the annual Boardwalk Parade in Atlantic City. He is an internal auditor with Medical Facilities of America, the largest provider of long-term healthcare services in Virginia. Jerry is treasurer and a member of the board of directors for the Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company. He lives in Norfolk, Virginia, and is also a professional photographer and an avid bicyclist.
 

Danielle Bazylak

            Danielle Bazylak is the evening anchor at WSEE-TV, a CBS affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania. Danielle graduated from Allegheny College, with a bachelor of arts degree in Communication Arts and a minor in Political Science. While completing her degree at Allegheny College, Danielle was hired as WSEE’s first Crawford County Bureau reporter. After graduating from college, Danielle became WSEE’s weekend producer, weekday reporter and then Morning Show reporter. In October of 2002, Danielle was promoted to solo anchor for WSEE’s 5:30pm and 11:00pm broadcasts. As Miss Crawford County 1997, Danielle’s platform was Adult Literacy. Danielle has fifteen years of classical opera training. She has performed in dozens of theater productions at The Academy Theatre and The Erie Playhouse, including lead roles in “West Side Story” and “Grease”. Danielle received an Associated Press Award for her contributions to an hour long “Caring for Kids” special and was chosen as the Crawford County Business and Professional Women’s Young Careerist of 2003.


Dr. Gregg Amore

            Dr. Gregg Amore is a licensed psychologist employed at DeSales University since 1972. He has served the college in multiple roles, including Director of Counseling and Chairman of the Psychology Department. Through his personal IMPACT program, and as a contract psychologist with L. G. E Performance Systems in Orlando, Dr. Amore has addressed the needs of business, professional, and sports groups nationally.

            Extensive graduate study in business, combined with first hand business experience as owner and operator of Amore Farms, Greenhouses, Vineyards & Winery, has enabled him to combine theory and practice. Growing and selling nearly 100 acres of fresh vegetables and millions of greenhouse plants and thousands of gallons of wine annually has equipped him with a keen perspective as both psychologist and businessman.

            As a multi-engine instrument flight instructor, and Learjet pilot, he has had numerous opportunities to enable individuals to challenge themselves, overcome their fears, and maximize their potential. Dr. Amore has maintained his interest in health and fitness through competitive natural bodybuilding since 1973. He has won over 140 awards, including four national championships, and the prestigious 2000 Grandmasters World Championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

 

Stephanie Reisberg

            Stephanie Reisberg is the Executive Director and President of the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization. She has been involved with the Miss America Organization at the local and state levels for close to 10 years, during which time she has been a contestant, a judge and a director.

            When not spending time preparing Miss Vermont for Miss America, Stephanie is the General Manager of a software company in Toronto, Canada. She is a volunteer for numerous community organizations, is involved with local theatre groups, and spends what little free time she has exercising and shopping.

Scoring Notes (from the Miss America Score Sheets)

* The "Composite Attributes" score is based on the following- " Considering ALL factors- the "Qualities and Attributes of Miss State" and the Preliminary Phases of Competition and Respective criteria for scoring."


# Only the contestants with the five highest scores compete in this phase. "Evaluate her overall performance in all phases of competition and whether or not she should be MISS STATE. The extemporaneous responses to On-stage Interview questions are included in this overall evaluation."
 

Additional Scoring Information

  The contestants with the ten highest scores will be in the final competition on Saturday night. The contestant with the highest score from that final competition will become Miss Pennsylvania. All judging is based on a 1 to 10 scoring system that uses only whole numbers. The highest and lowest scores for each contestant are dropped in every phase of competition.
